Why this exists, and who owns it
Top M&A Firms is an independent research and comparison platform for U.S. M&A advisory firms. We are not affiliated with, owned by, or paid by any firm to appear in this directory. No firm can purchase a higher rank. Placement is determined entirely by the criteria below.
The underlying database is built to help business owners, executives, private equity professionals and corporate development teams find an advisor that actually fits their deal, by industry, deal size, location and specialization, rather than defaulting to whichever firm has the biggest marketing budget.
How the Research Rank works
Each firm's position in the Top 100 reflects five factors, weighted together rather than any single metric:
- 01
Current recognition & activity
Standing in the most recent Axial Advisor 100 and related league tables, a live signal of deal activity, not a static or self-reported claim.
- 02
Lower-middle-market relevance
Weight is given to demonstrated relevance to lower-middle-market transactions, since that's where the largest share of business owners researching an advisor actually sit.
- 03
National prominence
Broader market recognition and reputation beyond a single region or deal.
- 04
Sector specialization
Depth of demonstrated experience in specific industries, not just a broad "we cover everything" claim.
- 05
Usefulness to business owners
Where signals conflict, we weight toward what's most useful to someone selecting an advisor for their own deal.
Our primary sources
Data confidence levels
Every data point on a firm profile is tagged with one of four confidence levels. You'll see these badges throughout the directory. This is the legend.
Confirmed directly against the firm's own published materials.
Confirmed by an independent source: Axial, FINRA BrokerCheck, SEC filings, or reputable press.
Derived from market positioning or comparable firms, not a figure the firm has explicitly published.
We don't yet have reliable information, and say so rather than guess.
We would rather publish an honest "Unknown" than a confident-looking number we can't stand behind.
How deal-size ranges are normalized
Deal-size bands shown across the directory are a mix of figures firms have publicly stated and estimates based on market positioning. Where a range is estimated rather than firm-published, it's labeled Estimated / Inferred directly on the firm's profile.
We normalize into nine standard bands (Under $5M through $1B+) so firms can be compared on equal terms, even when they each describe their own focus differently.
How industry categories are built
Firms publish their sector focus in wildly different language. We normalize these into a standardized taxonomy so firms can be compared and filtered consistently. Where normalizing loses meaningful nuance, a firm that's genuinely a pure specialist, for example, we call it out directly on the relevant industry page.
Headquarters & location data
We list each firm's headquarters or main U.S. office where it's known. This is more ambiguous for firms with multiple principal offices or global operations. We flag these cases for individual verification rather than picking an office arbitrarily.
This is a research seed, not a finished public directory, and we're saying so on purpose
The current 100-firm dataset was compiled as a research seed for building this platform, current as of August 19, 2026. Every row is individually flagged for review before public launch. Figures shown elsewhere on this site will be updated as each firm clears review.
Update cadence
Full re-ranking
The Top 100 is rebuilt from current source data at least once a year.
New research additions
New firms are added to the research pipeline continuously toward Phase II and Phase III.
Corrections
Factual corrections are investigated and applied outside the annual cycle.
Corrections & firm submissions
If something looks wrong, or you believe your firm's profile is inaccurate, missing, or out of date, tell us. See our For Firms page for how to reach the right team.
Sponsored placements
This directory does not currently accept paid placements. If that changes, every sponsored position will be clearly labeled, kept visually and structurally separate from editorial rank, and will never move a firm's Research Rank.
